The mission and vision of HOPENZ is to “transform the lives of the poor, creating sustainable communities where people want to live, and where they can have access to healthy water, enough good food, education, and environmental responsibility to allow them to sustain and continually improve their quality of life.

Clean drinking water

Without clean water families suffer and die from preventable diseases like cholera and Dysentery. It is virtually impossible for families to lift themselves out of poverty without access to clean water. HOPENZ’s funding provides the materials for establishing simple water schemes, educates about basic sanitation practices and provides a composting latrine.

Sustainable agriculture

One of the biggest challenges facing poor families is the inability to grow enough food to sustain themselves all year round. Seeds, basic hand tools and “know how” are beyond their reach. HOPENZ provides agricultural training, seeds and tools that will not only enable a family to grow enough food to sustain themselves, but also provide much needed income from selling their surplus.

Income development

Women in developing countries often find themselves marginalised and unable to earn an income to help support their families. HOPENZ funds a skills training programme enabling the women to start small community based businesses that will provide much needed income to pay for life’s necessities and provide family security.

Education and training

Training is an integral part of the programme design of all HOPENZ projects. All HOPENZ programmes involve at least five or six months of training on various project related topics, and refresher training continues during the monitoring stage if necessary. There is a direct link between poverty and lack of education.
